I did not intend to imply that all regulation is good, but there should be
something to ensure medical data is not lost or that systems are down for
an extended period of time. It's just as important to have data
immediately available as it is to have the OR available when needed. Most
medical facilities already have systems in place and there is too much
regulation, IMO. It makes it that much more expensive for both the
facility and patient. What is needed is something in between what we have
and what is needed. My gripe is that labs should be held to a data safety
standard and they obviously are not. A three day network outage is beyond
unreasonable. In any case, if they cannot keep their network up, they
need to have paper files in parallel. What is even more frightening is
the almost total reliance on computer systems to even complete tests and
then have the network down.
Would you hate to find that a critical test could not be completed in a
life and death situation because the network was down? :( It scares me
anyway.
