I have read alot of the conversation today, and I am coming into this a bit late. Jeff, I think you are way off key. We are not here for ourselves and should not act in this sense. We should rather be here for the common good and to better life with the brief time we share on this Earth. Our explorations into space are truly a remarkable thing, it is helping us (yes that is humankind I am refering to) understand the wonders that surround us. Truly Jeff how much have you personally contributed to the NASA program. Probably less then .000000000001 so your little contribution is far from extortion. Btw, extortion is what cops do to criminals. Are you a criminal? Taxes are not voluntary but they do supply you sir with MANY MANY things you surely seem to take for granded. In so many words, look beyond your little existance and dreams for they affect the rest that inhabit this small little planet. And No the world does not revolve around you. Just for clarification. I am appauld that you can possible think of yourself instead of the 6 people that just died serving the greater cause.
