I suppose the Columbia's orbit was not proper for a station rendezvous,
or they could have waiting for another transport.

Of course, you have to remember too that shuttles have landed before
with tile damage, so even if they saw damage they might not have
aborted.

I can't remember now, but I think they have to have at least one crew
member to bring the ship down.  Most of the flight is computer controlled,
but through crew actions.  

We still would have needed someone to volunteer to bring the ship down
if failure was not garanteed.
