Welfare is still pretty expensive.

It's also not a direct cost.  Spending $1 on welfare meant also losing
a lot more in taxation and economic power.

I know I've heard some states changed things so that you could continue
working and get assistance.  It saved a lot of money, and most people
got completely off eventually, whereas before you just had generation
after generation of welfare families.

I didn't think this had happened across the board yet, and looking around
locally it doesn't seem to have happened.
