I agree.  My desktop at home gets upgraded CONSTANTLY, because I want the
latest and I learn from it.  But my servers at work are a whole different
story.  I get them stable and leave them alone until I am forced to upgrade
them because of the need to run some application that (for whatever reason)
can't live happily on something old.  Keep in mind they are applications
servers, not just puny file servers or print servers or web servers or
other such one-tasked-typed machines.  So one would think I would need to
upgrade more often,  I just find it is usually not the case...  I am not so
interested in the "latest and greatest" as I am in productivity,
reliability, TCO, stability, etc.

Now, machines connected as a gateway/router/firewall... those should be
updated (not necessarily upgraded) when necessary to close security holes. 
But that is different.

When it IS time to upgrade... I always do a fresh install.
