Been there, done that. I'm still uncomfortable with the way it works
(or in my case, doesn't).

I failed to mention this in my OP, but your point about ports makes an
interesting case. The problem for the commercial distros is that they
don't control the upstream software. Really and truly, with how fast
the development works these days, a year is a long time for a piece of
software to be stable (and secure). When you CVSup your tree, you can
move to a new version when it's released, no? OpenBSD has a set 6 month
release cycle.....
All in all, the rpm-based distros need to do something about making it
possible to upgrade the machines easily. Either by using apt and online
repositories, or something else. I dunno.
