From TWUUG

June 2008

  • Presentation by Mark Davis on nesting of Xservers. Xnest and the newer Xephyr allow users to run one Xserver inside another one. Then the user can run additional applications inside that Xserver window for testing or convenience, even as a different user. By tweaking xdm/kdm/gdm you can even get a GUI login screen for your local machine, or you can use XDMCP to contact other machines on your network to get a login screen. At the suggestion of Adam, we successfully nested an Xserver inside another nested Xserver inside the primary (real) Xserver.
  • Mike Perry gave a presentation on "sed", the Stream EDitor. Using sed, one can quickly manipulate text files, especially with find and replace (substitute).
  • Ethan O'Toole shared a secret FTP server with lots of old Unix goodies.

The meeting WAS audio recorded. Many discs were available.
