A Windows or Mac computer is required to intially set up the service, but after that is done all Cox services (e-mail, web, news, etc.) work well with Linux/BSD using provided documentation and instructions by Cox.
As opposed to DSL (with PPPoE) Cox uses direct IP address assignment via DHCP. This is supported by default with most linux distributions, but using a Home Router (wired, wireless, or build-your-own from a spare PC) can let you connect multiple PC's to the Internet via NAT and protect you with a firewall.
