Ubuntu is a linux distribution organized by Canonical, Ltd. (South Africa) Ubuntu is based on debian and aims to be an easy-to-use distribution for the masses.
Ubuntu uses the Gnome desktop environment by default, but support for KDE is very easy to add via the package management system in Ubuntu.
Kubuntu is a distribution derived from Ubuntu that supports KDE by default.
Edubuntu is also derived from Ubuntu and is aimed towards schools, and provides many applications useful for educational purposes by default.
