Purpose
The purpose of the site:
- Provide the community with information about TWUUG
- Provide information about the next meeting date, time, location
- Provide useful guides to TWUUG members
- Provide a place to log meeting logs
- Anything else we can think of!
Type
Although it might not look like it at first glance, this is a collaborative website, based on Media Wiki. This is the same technology that powers the incredible WikiPedia Encyclopedia!
We have customized the standard wiki to meet our needs. You will find there are many advantages of this design for our group:
- Wiki pages are easy to edit
- Since it is collaborative, everyone can get involved
- Group involement ensures there will be more information, better information, and more timely information
Being a Wiki, this site can:
- Track all changes made to every page
- Undo intentional or accidental damage to pages
- Provide quick full-text searching of the site
- Let each user "watch" pages for changes
- Quickly show everything that is new
- Allow integration of pictures and sound files
Look at the "Special Pages" for many more features
Who Can Participate?
Anyone can contribute to editing the majority of this site. Some pages are locked to prevent severe damage to the site. To edit a page, all you have to do is create an account or login to an existing account.
At this time, we do not allow anonymous editing of pages.
Once you have logged into the system, you will see a new section on the left of the website called "Personal Tools", where you can set your preferences and specify pages to watch, see what you contributed, etc. You will also be able to edit any non-locked page.
We *WANT* as many TWUUG members to participate in making this site the best it can possibly be. Even if you don't think you have anything creative to offer, you can still correct an occasional spelling mistake, punctuation, or even add links to existing words.
Guidelines
Please feel free to look at any page with the editor so you can learn the simple syntax of the Wiki markup language. Just cancel out if you don't need to make changes.
See our Wiki Tips page for some helpful hints and suggestions about editing our wiki.
Generally, when editing:
- Make an effort to understand the markup language. For more information on the markup language used by mediawiki see 1 2 - note that this is the same markup language used on wikipedia.
- Follow reasonable organizational practices
- Before adding new pages, make sure there isn't something similar already on the site
- Don't make unnecessary changes or rewordings, just for the sake of changing something
- Don't go overboard with pictures- they can be nice, but can also be distracting and slow down the loading of pages
- Try to include only original content, otherwise just provide links to outside the site as necessary.
- Never use this site to attack members, what they say, or what they believe
If you believe someone is intentionally damaging the site, please bring it to our attention on the mailing lists so it can be investigated by a sysop.
